Best Low Maintenance Perennials for Your Arizona Garden

We all want a beautiful garden filled with aromatic and colorful flowers that will be the envy of all our neighbors, making our homes look as if they could be on the cover of a home and garden magazine, but the reality is we don’t always have the time to care for flowers that need constant maintenance. And living in the desert, most flowers require constant upkeep, right? Fortunately, this is not always the case, and we have provided this list of low maintenance perennials to allow you to enjoy the landscape of your dreams without having to spend a lot of time working on it!

Gerbera Daisy

The Gerbera Daisy is one of our favorites, requiring little maintenance but looking as if it must be difficult to grow. It comes in many different colors, including dramatic red and glowing orange, and does well in the scorching Arizona sun. They work best in raised beds, as drainage is essential, but otherwise are very simple to care for.

Bunny Ears Cactus

Perennials don’t have to mean flowers, although the Bunny Ear Cactus does have beautiful sunny yellow blooms every spring! And because this particular cactus rarely grows spikes, it is safe to grow in a home with children or small animals. Requiring full sun and very little watering, the bright green of the Bunny Ears Cactus makes it a great border option.

Texas Red Yucca

This grassy looking plant features bright red or pink flowers that bloom in the summer. Hardy, drought tolerant, and requiring full sun, your garden will be more beautiful with the addition of this desert plant!

Penstemon

What’s better than having a beautifully blooming perennial in your garden that doesn’t need much maintenance? Having one that attracts hummingbirds, and the penstemon is that plant! It’s dark green leaves and multiple color blooms (you can find the penstemon in blue, orange, pink, purple, red, yellow, and white) make a great ground cover and require full sun. The plant is also extremely drought tolerant.

Salvia

Hummingbirds and butterflies are both attracted to this striking desert plant that comes in a variety of colors; the true blue is a personal favorite of ours! Growing well in full sun to partial shade and needing very little water, adding salvia to your garden is the perfect finishing touch, guaranteed to impress your neighbors!
