Sprinkler Maintenance Tips

When you live in the desert, if you don’t want to spend all your free time outside watering your grass, flowers, and plants, an automatic sprinkler system can be your best friend, as well as an eco-friend to our most precious resource. Allowing you to use just the right amount of water to keep your landscape healthy and green, the benefits of a sprinkler are obvious, but as with every mechanical device, maintenance is needed to keep them working at optimum levels. Here’s a list of sprinkler maintenance tips that will keep your system working for a long, long, long time!

Keep Them Clean

To maintain maximum performance, you need to make sure the nozzles remain clear and unobstructed. Dirt, leaves, and even trash can keep your sprinklers from working well. Simply take off the sprinkler heads and rinse them off with a hose, then replace. It’s not necessary to do this daily or even weekly, but if you start noticing some dry spots on your lawn, most likely it is due to a blocked nozzle.

Check the Pressure

Overwatering can be almost as damaging as underwatering, and sometimes you will discover that the reason your yard is being overwatered is due to improper pressure. Your sprinkler manual will show you how to check the pressure.

Adjust the Schedule as Needed

Weather changes not just from season to season, but day to day, minute to minute, and even from year to year. Last summer’s heavy rainfall meant you didn’t need to water as often or as long, but after 100 plus days without rain this year, you probably will need to increase the watering schedule to keep your lawn healthy. Pay attention to your lawn’s needs and adjust the schedule as needed.

Keep an Eye out for Leaks and Other Sprinkler Maintenance Tips

It not difficult to find a leak if you’re looking for it; if an area appears unusually green and feels squishy beneath bare feet, your sprinkler has sprung a leak—especially if the dark spot isn’t near the head. It may require a little digging to find the exact spot where the leak is, but by remaining vigilant, you can expect your sprinkler system to serve you well for years to come.

It Really Isn’t That Difficult

But we understand that in the busy world we all live in, sometimes it’s the little things that get pushed under the rug. There just aren’t enough hours in the day to do everything you need to do.
